In Awe of God

Have you ever been impressed by something or someone? Is there anything that you have ev
er been wowed by? One word, AWE, is defined as “an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like.” We use the word awesome all the time. But when do we feel that something is truly AWEsome? Fill in the blank. Picture it in your mind.

Now think about where we find the purist sense of the word ‘awe’? There’s only one place. Only one source. The One who is beyond our comprehension. It is in the presence of the Lord God Almighty that we stand in AWE. Jehovah. The Great I AM. If we fail to be in awe of God, then something is seriously missing from our hearts.

In one of the best ways possible, Paul expressed the awe he felt towards God. This is found in the letter he wrote to the Roman Christians. In the book of Romans, Paul spent most of his time talking about the awesome salvation that has come from God through faith in Jesus His Son. Paul fervently talked about the great love of God. His plan. His power. He wanted to make sure the brethren knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that our God is an awesome God and His love is like nothing we could ever imagine. After 311 verses of writing about this great salvation, Paul had this interjection to make: Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?’ ‘Or who has given a gift to Him that he might be repaid?’ For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:33-36). It’s as if Paul was so excited and emotional talking about God that as he continued to write the sense of awe was welling up until he could no longer hold it in. He just let out the praise of God in his writing. Wow. As we read from the Bible, we need to well up with awe and burst out in praise to God.

The depth of God’s love, mercy, and grace are far too rich for us to wrap our brains around. The uncontainable wisdom that God possesses staggers our minds. The knowledge of God is endless. We cannot fathom His judgments. We cannot understand the ways of the LORD. We fall very short of God. We do not compare in any way. We are to be blown away by the God up in Heaven.

What should stun us the most and knock us off our feet is that this God actually loves us. The Lord has spent all His time providing us the salvation we will never deserve. How could a God like Him love a person like me? Well, that’s exactly what makes His love so rich, His wisdom so grand, and His knowledge so vast that His judgments and ways are far beyond our ability to comprehend. Whenever we try to fathom God, all we find is a great big headache because we can’t do it.

GOD IS AWESOME!
