Good vs. Evil

“Good vs. evil.” Doesn’t that bring every comic, movie, book, or play to mind? But the battle between good and evil is not just in books and movie. It is a good summation of what life realistically is about. From day one in the garden of Eden mankind has been faced with choosing either to do good or to do evil. Adam and Eve could have done good and not eaten of the tree that God said not to. Or they could have done evil and eaten of the tree that God said not to. It was their choosing to do evil that got us all in this mess of sin. Since then we have all been choosing for ourselves whether to do good or evil. The Bible shows us that life breaks down into these two choices. Every example we have in Scripture hinges upon this choice. Which one will define our lives today is left up to each and every one of us.

God has sent His word to us telling us and teaching us to do good. We are to do good because doing evil leads to Hell. And nobody wants that. So we are told to weigh our options and decide which we will choose. We know what the right answer is. We know that there’s only one answer that leads to eternal life: Choosing to do what is good and holy in God’s eyes.

Paul made our choice real easy for us in Romans 12:9b when he said: “Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” We know God hates sin. We know that sin leads to Hell. Because of that Paul tells us to hate sin. Evil is to be disgusting to us. We are to want to have nothing to do with it. Get away from it. Put it as far away as possible. Paul says that we are to run away from sin and grab the good stuff and hold on for dear life. Cling to good. Don’t let go. It is our life saver. Sin will try to pull us away from it but we have to hold on tight. Find out what is good. Find out what is pleasing to God. Then live it. Do it. Share it.

Paul also said in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 to “abstain from every form of evil.” Again Paul says to have nothing to do with evil things. As a matter of fact, Paul said that if it looks like sin, smells like sin, or sounds like sin then stay away from it. Paul said to hold fast to what is good.

Let’s make sure that we hate the sinful things of this world. Abhor it. Abstain from it. Cling to what is good. Are you? Am I? Every day is about the choices we make. Choose good, not evil.
