“Blessed…” That’s an important word. A big word. It is something that we all want as opposed to not being blessed. We want to have life. A good future. Something to look forward to. Jesus talk about those who would be BLESSED with a place in His eternal kingdom. A home in Heaven with God. If we want to be one of the “blessed” then we need to take notes and follow what Jesus says. Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. Blessed are the meek. And now notice who else is blessed.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.”
Have you ever been hungry? Thirsty? That’s a silly question. We get hungry and thirsty all day long. We know what it’s like to want/need food and drink. Seeing as we’d die without food and drink, we want it pretty badly. It’s at the top of our list.
Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be spiritually? Jesus said it is. God tells us that we will die in our sins if we don’t repent and live in His righteousness. That’s a pretty big deal. That’s about an eternity in Heaven or Hell. That’s way more important than food. We’ve got to be hungry and thirsty to provide spiritual nourishment and life to our souls. Are you hungry for God? For His righteousness? It’s got to be at the top of our list.
What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness? What does that look like? It is trying our hardest to understand what the will of the Lord is. To find out what is pleasing to Him. It is having a desire to spend time in His Word. A desire to know Him, see Him, feel Him in His Word. It is trying our best to live a godly life. It is wanting to be active in good works. Wanting to serve. Wanting to praise God in all things. It is wanting to be at the worship services. It is wanting to be with other Christians worshiping and thanking God. It is wanting to spend time with others in Bible study. It is wanting to help others in their needs. It is walking the walk and talking the talk that God has made us for. It’s being passionate about our Savior. It is refusing to live in sin any longer. It is about being on fire for the Lord. It is about being excited to share the good news of salvation with others so that they too can be hungry and thirsty for righteousness.
Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness. Who love God. Who love Jesus. Who love others. Are you hungry? Am I thirsty? Are you failing to feed your soul? Am I just snacking on God’s righteousness? Are you skipping meals here and there? Or are we constantly feeding on God’s righteousness and craving more? Do you try to add dessert to your daily meals? Wanting to grow more and more? God has given us everything we need for life and godliness. If you are hungry, He’ll feed ya. Start salivating right now. Go eat. Stuff your heart. Go drink. Be refreshed. Enjoy.
