Can I Be In God’s Presence?

In Psalm 8 David asked God what is man that He cares for us. I agree. When we see how awesome God is we have to be extremely humbled that He cares for us. God is so great in power, in love, in holiness, in justice, in mercy. I do not measure up. Not even close. John said in 1 John 3:1 that we need to stop and think hard about how awesome it is that we can be children of God. I can call myself a child of God. How is that possible? I am not worthy to be called His child. I am not worthy of His love. I am not worthy to be in His presence. But that’s what makes our God an awesome God. His grace is amazing. His forgiveness is inexpressible.

God has told us how we can be in His presence. How He lets us be in His presence. David says it best in Psalm 15. David asked, “O LORD, who shall sojourn in Your tent? Who shall dwell on Your holy hill?” David wanted to know who could possibly be with God. How could anyone be able to walk with God? David was in awe of God’s holiness. How could David be in God’s presence? How can I be in God’s presence? David gives us the answer in the following verses:

“He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart; who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend; in whose eyes a vile person is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; who swears to his own hurt and does not change; who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent.”

David says that the only way we can be in the presence of God is to live the godly, holy life He has called us to live. We are to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:14-16). God is willing to forgive us of our sins. He makes us clean. Pure. Holy. The Lord makes us acceptable by His grace. To say it is a privilege and an honor to be in God’s presence doesn’t even begin to describe how awesome that is.

Think about what it will be like when we actually get to see God face to face. I can’t even imagine. One day we will be in the very presence of God. Wow. Indescribable. Do you want to be there? I want to be there. If we want to be there then we need to be living in the holiness of God. Remember the words of the Hebrew writer: “Strive for…the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.” I want to see the Lord. So I am going to do my best to live the way God wants me to. Let’s do it together. Act the way God wants you to. Speak the way God wants you to. Think the way God wants you to. God wants you to be in His presence. And you will be if you live for Him.
