Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hoping in things that are invisible to man’s eyes. Believing. Trusting. Obeying. It takes great faith to believe in anything that is outside our natural limitations. We can’t fully comprehend eternity. Or God. Jesus. Satan. Heaven. Hell. Death. Resurrection. But by faith we understand. By faith we see the invisible. And we live accordingly. We act on that faith. It is what drives us and controls us through life.
Another example of this kind of faith is seen in Moses and the people of Israel when they made their exodus from Egypt. Israel had suffered at the hands of the Pharaoh. God heard their cry. He sent Moses to lead them out of Egypt. God used ten plagues to cause Pharaoh to finally let His people go. But it would take great faith for Moses and Israel to make that exodus. Notice how the Hebrews writer explains it: “By faith [Moses] left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them. By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned” (Hebrews 11:27-29). Moses went up against Pharaoh who could’ve had him killed at any time. Pharaoh finally told them to leave but it would take courage and faith for Moses and Israel to leave. Moses had that courage. He had that faith. Moses believed God when He told him that He was going to be killing the firstborn of all the land. He believed what God told him on how to prevent it from happening to the Israelites. God told Moses to eat the Passover and use the blood to put on the door posts so that the Destroyer wouldn’t kill their firstborn. He did it. By faith. It was by faith that the Israelites took those first steps between the two walls of water. It took faith for them to cross the Red Sea on dry ground. By that faith they crossed safely while the Egyptians were destroyed by God.
God is invisible to us. But by faith we know He is there. With that faith we have no fear of man nor the things of this world. By faith we believe His Word as found in the Bible. By faith we obey His commandments. Whatever He tells us to do. We do it. By faith we will make it safely to Heaven to be with God for eternity. But we have to walk by faith and not by sight. Courage. Endurance. Hope. Assurance. Satan is the Pharaoh of this world. We will not be afraid. We will faithfully obey God. We will walk by faith until we reach the goal. By faith in Jesus Christ we are delivered. By faith we have made our exodus from sin.
