John writes in 1 John 3:16-18 – “By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”
John tells us that we know what real love is like. How do we know? Because God has shown us real love in that He sent Jesus to die for us and Jesus willingly laid down His life for us. We are told to follow this example and lay down our lives for our brothers.
John then gives application. John says that real love, laying your life down for your brother, is helping them in their time of need. Showing kindness and care to them. Seeking to help and serve. Giving of yourself.
John tells us that real love, godly love is more than just having good thoughts and feelings toward one another. Real love is about acting on those good thoughts and intentions.
Find ways in which you can actively love your brother in deed and in truth and not just in word or thought.
To GOD be the glory!
